  • Prepare the Area: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the wound. Gather all the necessary supplies: clean gauze pads or bandages, antiseptic solution or wipes, scissors (clean and sterilized), and medical tape.
  • Clean the Wound: Gently clean the wound with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, as they can damage the tissue and delay healing. Rinse the wound gently to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Apply Antiseptic: If the wound is dirty or prone to infection, apply an antiseptic solution or wipe around the wound edges. This helps to kill any bacteria and reduce the risk of infection. Allow it to air dry or gently pat it dry with a clean towel.
  • Apply Medication (if needed): If your healthcare provider has prescribed any topical medication, apply it according to their instructions.
  • Dress the Wound: Place a sterile gauze pad over the wound. Make sure the pad is large enough to cover the entire wound area. If necessary, cut the gauze to size using clean scissors. Secure the gauze in place with medical tape, making sure not to wrap it too tightly.
  • Change the Dressing: Depending on the severity of the wound and your healthcare provider’s recommendations, you may need to change the dressing daily or every few days. Always wash your hands before changing the dressing.
  • Monitor the Wound: Keep an eye on the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or drainage. If you notice any of these signs, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Seek Medical Attention: If the wound is deep, gaping, or does not seem to be healing properly, seek medical attention. Some wounds may require stitches or other medical intervention to heal properly.
